字.

  • zhì - ambition; record

This word came up on my iKnow today. I recognised it from 杂志 (magazine), but didn't realise that it had the meaning, ambition.

    他立志当一名科学家。
He aims at becoming a scientist.

  • 缺乏

quēfá - be short of, scarcity

I switched to an easier Skritter course today, so have picked a word from my iKnow course instead, for no real reason other than I liked the look of the characters.

    他缺乏自信。
    He lacks self confidence.

  • cāi - guess

Another Skritter word, which came up a few days ago, but which I got wrong today. Maybe the fact that I can't pronounce it makes it harder for me to recall. I should create a mnemonic involving a green dog or something.

    我猜也猜不到你是什么意思。
I cannot even guess at what you mean.

  • 引起

yǐnqǐ - give rise to, cause

Another word from word I learnt through Skritter. I like it mainly for the first character, which means to draw a bow, and for the sentence below.

    饥饿引起犯罪
    Hunger begets crime.

  • 了解

    liǎojiě - understand, find out

  • chéng - orange (tree or colour)

Victoria taught me this word during lunch in a pub in Mount Batton today. I hadn't learnt this word before, either for the colour or the fruit. I had learnt the word 桔子, which apparently means 'tangerine'. Close enough. Although, in the sentence below, 橙 seems to mean lime.

    这酸橙咖喱菜非常辣。
This lime curry is particularly hot .

  • qiā - pinch, pick (flowers)

I heard this word on a Popup Chinese podcast and realised it was the first time I'd heard a Chinese word with the sound 'qia'. MDBG confirms that there are very few 'qia' words and this is the only one with a first tone. Interestingly, 卡, which I had learnt has being pronounced kǎ, can also be pronounced qiǎ.

    她掐了他胳膊一下, 把他叫醒.
She gave him a pinch on the arm to wake him up.

  • 黑客

    hēikè - hacker

This was Nciku's word of the day today and I liked it. Interestingly, it literally means 'black guest', but that's probably irrelevant, as the word is obviously phonetic.

    上周这个网站被黑客攻击了。
Last week this site was attacked by a hacker.

  • 麻辣

    málà - hot and numbing

Today we made a steamboat and used a so-called 麻辣 base. It wasn't as hot and numbing as we fear, though it was a bit artificial. By the end of cooking, it tased great though.

    四川菜麻辣浓香.
Sichuan food is spicy and hot.

  • 鼻涕

    bítì - snot

I heard this word while listening to a podcast this morning and it stood out because it sounds like BT. I can be translated as 'nose tears', which is almost endearing.

    我伤风感冒很重, 直流鼻涕。
I have got a bad cold, running at the nose.
