字.

  • 懒惰

    lǎnduò - lazy

This is a word that I learnt from Victoria. She seems to use it a lot for some reason, I can't imagine why.

    这个懒惰的孩子常虚度时光。
The lazy boy often dreams his time away.

  • 熟悉

    shúxī - familiar

This word was nciku's word of the day, and I've not seen it before. Seems like a good word and one worth knowing.

    我对上海不熟悉,最好能有当地人伴游。

I'm not familiar with Shanghai, so I hope that I can travel with a local.

  • - tie, fasten

This word was in one of the online courses I've signed up for in the sentence below. The character looked familar, which probably because it part of the words series and system, but there it is pronounced .

    请系上安全带。
    Please fasten your seat belts.

  • jiù - save, rescue

I remember learning this word a while ago, probably whilst reading Tintin, but I saw it in an email recently, as part of 急救箱 so I'm putting it here.

    急救箱在哪里?
Where is the first aid kit?

  • tiān - append, add, increase

画蛇添足 was one of the first 成语 I learnt, and while I can remember the idea, I can never remember the word, 添.

    画蛇添足
Draw legs on a snake (Gild the lily / Ruin something by adding a superfluous effect).

  • 重复

    chóngfù - repeat

I did some iKnow for the first time in a while, and this word came up. As with every other time it's come up, I got it wrong. Which is ironic considering the sentence associated with it.

    重复看,才会记住。
Only with repeated viewing can you remember (words).

  • 主动

zhǔdòng - take the initiative, spontaneous, active

This was nciku's word of today, and I thought I should know it. They translated it as 'voluntary', although in none of their example sentences did it seem to have that meaning. It seems to have the meaning of doing something of your own accord. I actually came across the word when I was first learning Chinese in one of my favourite Chinese songs (简单爱) in a sentence that I still don't really understand:

    我变得很主动。
I have become very proactive (?).

  • liàn - exercise, practise

I came across this word today as the title of a Flickr picture and it looked familiar. I'd learnt it on iKnow but couldn't remember what it meant (although I did remember its reading somehow). It seems like a good word to learn as I'm supposed to be practising.

    只有常练, 才能学好汉语。
Only by practising constantly can we learn Chinese well.

  • 抗议

    kàngyì - protest

This word appeared on my iKnow media course and has seemed very apt this year. To help me learn the word I added it to my Skritter and it worked: I can now read and write the characters. Now I need to learn how to use it in a sentence.

     在埃及人民示威抗议了。
    In Egypt, the people protested.

  • 回眸

    huímóu - glance back, retrospective

I picked this word because today I made a retrospectroscope. 眸 means the pupil of an eye.

    回眸过去, 豪情满怀; 展望未来, 信心百倍。
Looking Back, we are filled with pride; looking into future, we are full of confidence.
