  • 政府

    zhèngfǔ - government

After several days we (the British people), finally have a government (a word that, of course, is from Smart.fm).

    我们都今天有了一个新政府。
Today we have a new government.

  • 成功

    chénggōng - success, succeed

Yet another Smart.fm word, chosen today because I had some success with the latest evolutionary project I'm working on. I should write about some of the nuts and bolts of the program, because it's all quite new to me - running multiple processes simultaneously on a supercomputer.

    我知道如果我坚持下去就会成功。
I knew if I kept at it I should succeed.

  • 门户

ménhù - door, strategic gateway, portal; faction, sect, family

I chose this word today because the game, Portal was released for free and for Mac, so Victoria downloaded it. It is a very clever puzzle game. The word, 门户, which I think is the correct word, is made of two characters, both of which mean door.

    门户正在免费了。
    Portal is now free.

  • zhí - to plant

I chose this word today, because I went to met Steve in Plant Sciences, and the word for Botany (which is the same thing), in Chinese is 植物学 (植物 means plant or vegetation). I like the word 植 as it's is clear from the radical that it is to do with plants/trees and from the other part, that it is pronounced zhi.

    学习植物学使我对大自然了解了许多。
In learning botany, I understand much about nature.

  • xiāo - disappear; to spend (time), consume; need; news

I chose this word today because I found, when I opened my presentation for tomorrow, that all but two of the images had disappeared. In all three copies of the presentation that I had. Actually, all the images were still there, but appeared completely blank. I then spent the rest of the day adding the images back in and making images of all the slides, so that I could still do the presentation if the images disappeared again. I still don't know why it happened.

  • 面试

    miànshì - interview

I had an interview today, which was scary; it was the first interview I'd had for a long time. I like the word (but not the experience) because it is literally 'face (to face) test'.

    那次面试比他想的糟得多。
The interview was much worse than he had expected.

  • 摄影

    shèyǐng - photography

I took me so long to learn this word. I picked it because we went to a Flickr meet tonight, which was good fun. I also wrote about photography properly on my blog for the first time in ages.

    摄影是他的爱好之一。
Photography is one of his hobbies.

  • 准备

    zhǔnbèi - prepare, preparation

I spent most of today preparing my presentation for my interview at Plymouth. 准备 is one of my favourite words from Smart.fm, but I'm not sure why.

    他正准备明天集会的演说。
He is preparing his speech for the meeting tomorrow.

  • 失去

    shīqù - to lose

I picked this word because when I looked at my presentation today, I found that I had lost all my images, even on the back-up copies of the presentation. The boxes where still there, but they appeared blank. I spent the rest of the day adding them back and taking precautions to avoid the same thing happening again.

    他因为玩忽职守而失去工作,罪有应得。
It served him right to lose that job, because he neglected it.

  • - extensive, ample; obtain, win; gamble
