  • 费用

    fèiyòng - expense

This was one of the first words I learnt on the Smart.fm Media course - it is relevant today because we got the car back from its (failed) MOT.

    车费用十分昂贵。

  • jiǎn - scissors, cut with scissors, exterminate

Another everyday word that I haven't learnt, although I must have heard it a few times, not least when playing rock, paper, scissor. Today it is relevant because it came up in a Smart.fm dictation today, but more importantly I finally got my hair cut after about two years.

I quite like the character 剪 - it is 前 (qian) on top of a knife, 刀.

    我今天去剪发了。
I went to get my hair cut today.

  • 生活

    shēnghuó - life, activity

This is quite a basic word, which I originally found odd because I confused 活 with 话. I picked it today because Victoria passed the Life in UK test. We ate at Atomic Burger, and we packed our bags for our trip to Cormwall tomorrow.

    我们都喜欢乡村生活的宁静。
We all like the tranquility of the country life.

  • lèi - tired

A very common adjective and one that I learnt some time ago. There are several other words to mean tired or sleepy, but this is the only one I can remember. Today the word is pertinent because I drove to Cornwall, which was really quite tiring.

    我很累。
    I'm tired.

  • 馅饼

    xiànbǐng - meat pie, pasty

Today we went to Turo and ate pasties. The word for pasty is 馅, meaning stuffed and .

    那个馅饼味道不错。
    That pie tastes good.

  • chàng - sing

A nice common verb. This evening we sat in the chalet conservatory with candles and sang songs.

    他不会唱歌正如我不会跳舞一样。
He can no more sing than I can dance.

  • tān - beach

I thin this word has appeared in a Smart.fm dictation. Interestingly the character is 难, difficult , with the water radical. I picked it today because we went St. Ives at lay on the beach. I did a bit of paddling, but it was very cold.

    我们赤着脚在海滩上走来走去。
We walked around the beach barefoot.

  • lǎn - lazy

Today we stayed in our cottage a were very lazy. But that's what holidays are for.

    他非常懒惰,整天睡觉。
He is a very lazy person, sleeping all day.

  • bào - leopard

We didn't see a leopard today, but we did, unexpectedly, see some wild seals on a beach, and in Chinese, seal is a sea leopard, 海豹. This is one of the many animal words I learnt when I was first learning Chinese.

    海豹、海龟、企鹅均有鳍状肢。
Seals, turtles and penguins have flippers.
