字. April 2010

  • jià - holiday

Today Victoria spent all day looking at Cornish cottages for our holiday. I leant the word, 假, meaning holiday at Smart.fm and I like it because it can also mean if or fake, albeit with a different tone (discussed here).

    他请假了。
    He went on holiday.

  • 目前

mùqián - at the present time

Yet another word that has appeared in a few Smart.fm sentence, but not by itself, I think, and I find it confusing because it is literally 'eye before'. It has no particular relevance to today other than this post wasn't written at the present time, but much later, when I couldn't remember what happen on this day.

    到目前为止,天还在下雨。
    It's still raining, even now.

  • chéng - carry, continue; take charge; owing to; receive

Another Smart.fm character. It has appeared in a couple of compounds in my new course: 承诺 (promise) and 承认 (admit), so I wondered what it meant by itself. It turned out not to be very informative.

    他违背了承诺。
    He broke his promise.

  • 离职

lízhí - quit a job, retire

I chose this word because we went to Darwin's leaving party today. I've not come across the word before, but it is very logical: literally "to leave + profession".

    他不愿离职。他记得找这个工作他付出了多大代价。
He didn't want to quit his job. He remembered what it had cost him to find a job.

  • 辩论

    biànlùn - debate

Today was the first of the Election Debates for the UK 2010 General Election. I've not come across the word 辩论 before, but no doubt it will turn up on iKnow eventually. 论 I know and is pretty common, 辩 seems to just mean 'debate' or 'discuss'.

    今天有一场大选的辩论。
Today there was an election debate.

  • 应征

yìngzhēng - apply (for a job)

Today I applied for another job. I think I have come across a way of saying this in Smart.fm, but I can't remember it. This word will have to do, and it good because I know both characters already, although the sentences at dict.cn seem to imply that the word often means 'to enlist'.

    经理从所有的应征者中挑选了她作为他的秘书。
The manager picked Susan from all the applicants to be his secretary.

  • 发现

    fāxiàn - discover

A very useful word, which turns up a lot; also a good science word - I should make a compilation of science words, or maybe start writing about science in Chinese. It's my word today because we discovered that the library and a beautiful and peaceful garden at the back.

    我们今天发现了图书馆的背后有一个花园。很美丽很安静。
Today we discovered that there was a garden at the back of the library. It's very beautiful and peaceful.

  • 弹性

    tánxìng - flexibility

  • 签署

    qiānshǔ - sign (an agreement)

Another Smart.fm word (I keep thinking I should start tagging words). One I chose today because I signed on at the Job Centre today. I'm not sure if I can be used to refer to signing this sort of document, but I don't really care.

    他们肯定会签署这份合同吗?
Will they definitely sign this contract?

  • 项目

xiàngmù - item, project, sports event

Another Smart.fm word, and one that reminds me of 目前, which I wrote about last week. It seems that 目 has been confusing me because I only know that it means 'eye'. According to MDBG, it can also mean item, section, list, catalogue, table of contents, order (taxonomy), goal, name, title. So quite a range of generic meanings. The other character is 项, which I also only recently learnt on Smart.fm; it's another generic word meaning item or thing.
