字. March 2010

  • 金酒

    jīnjiǔ - gin

We made a nice afternoon G&T today. The Chinese for gin is literally 'golden alcohol', though the character, 金 is used phonetically rather than as a description of the drink.

    我喜欢喝金酒。
    I like gin.

  • 图表

    túbiǎo - chart

I spent today making interactive SVG charts. I tried to find the Chinese word for graph and found several, normally containing the character, 图. However, most of the words seemed to just mean a diagram normally. I hope this word is correct - Google images seems to think so.

    我今天做了一些图表。
    Today I make some graphs.

  • 进化

    jìnhuà - evolution

I had come across 演化, meaning to evolve, but not 进化. Apparently, an early translation of evolution was 天演, which seems to suggest a 'heavenly change', which is quite clearly an incorrect implication. I guess 进化 is literally 'to undergo a change'.

Today I allowed my simulated cells to evolve.

  • 论文

    lùnwén - thesis

I went into the lab today to start printing off my corrected thesis. The word for Ph.D thesis 学位论文, I think I came across the word for thesis in my very first Chinese lessons.

  • 印制

    yìnzhì - print

I first come across the character 印 in the word 印度, where it is used phonetically. Normally it means a stamp or seal (as in a wax seal, not the animal), hence it is used in the word for 'to print'.

    我今天印制完了我的论文。
Today I finished printing my thesis.

  • 长颈鹿

    chángjǐnglù - giraffe

An animal, and therefore a word I learnt a long time ago.

    我们和朋友们一起去了叫长颈鹿的饭店吃饭。
Today we went to a restaurant called Giraffe with friends.

  • dēng - light, lamp

One of the few everyday, household words that I actually know. I like the fact that the character's radical is fire.

    我们今天为'地球小时'关灯了。
Today we turned off all the lights for Earth hour.

  • 故意

    gùyì - deliberately, on purpose

I learnt this word today when Victoria taught me a fun Chinese game, one that I'd actually thought of as an idea for this blog. In the game, people take turns to say a word (in Chinese). The first character each word must be the same the last character of the previous word; it's a bit like the English game were you have to say a word beginning with the same letter that a previous word ended in. Our first attempt, went something like this:

    你好 - 好奇 - 奇怪 - 怪物 - 物价 - 价钱 - 钱包

  • 安排

    ānpái - arrange

I have been meaning to add this word for a long time. I came up a few times in Tin Tin and in the HSK tests. I was surprised that I hadn't learnt it sooner.

    我今天了安排一场会议。
    Today I arranged a meeting.

  • 职务

    zhíwù - post, position, job

Another Smart.fm word and relevant today, because today I went to the job centre.

    总经理提升了他的职务。
    His boss promoted him.
