字. February 2010

  • zhuāng - adorn, costume; pretend; install

This is yet another word that has recently come up on Smart.fm. I always confuse it with 袋. Today I took some of photos of my sisters dressed up in various odd costumes in the cold, wet woods.

    她们穿着奇怪的服装。
    They are wearing strange costumes.

  • 宝贝

    bǎobèi - treasure, darling; good-for-nothing

This word came up in a song we were listening to today. I'm not quite sure how it can mean both 'darling' and 'good-for-nothing'. These are the first two lines of the song:

    宝贝, 亲爱的宝贝
    一起喝咖啡
    Baby, dear baby,
    Let's drink coffee together.

  • 扫兴

    sǎoxìng - feel disappointed

Today I was disappointed, but I do like this word. 扫 means sweep and I mentioned it previously in the phrase 大扫除, to spring clean, so 扫兴 is to sweep away fortune, which is a poetic way to see things.

    天气又坏,吃的又糟。总而言之,这次假日很扫兴。
The weather was bad, and food was terrible. In all in all, the holiday was very disappointing.

  • 鸽子

    gēzi - pigeon

A while ago I spent some time learning as many Chinese words for animals, so I've know this word for some time. But it was suitable today because I cooked pigeon for the first time, which was quite exciting. Making it my 字 for today made me realise that the phonetic part of 鸽 is 合, which should help me remember how it's written.

    我今天首次做鸽子。
Today I cooked pigeon for the first time.

  • 首次

shǒucì - for the first time

I had to look this word up yesterday when I wrote about cooking pigeon for the first time. It seemed very handy, so I made it today's word.

    我今天首次做河蚌。
Today I cooked mussels for the first time.

  • 海鲜

    hǎixiān - seafood

This is one of the few words I know in Cantonese; it's hoisin, as in the sauce, 海鲜酱. It literally means 'sea fresh'.

    我今天吃了很多海鲜。
Today we ate loads of seafood.

  • 湿

    shī - moist

Today we went into town so Victoria could buy boots and lunch boxes. Then we cycled back in the rain. This word was in Smart.fm of course.

    我冒雨出去,结果被淋得湿透了。
I went out in the rain and got wet through.

  • péi - accompany

A very handy little word from Smart.fm.

    我陪恬去自助洗衣店。
I accompanied Victoria to the laundrette.
