字. January 2010

  • 元旦

    yuándàn - New Year

元旦 has appeared on Smart.fm and I've picked it as an alternative to the more literal translation of New Year: 新年. I assume they are interchangeable and can be used for the Western New Year.

    今天是元旦。
    Today is New Year.

  • 高速公路

    gāosùgōnglù - motorway

This word has come up on Smart.fm. Today we drove back to Oxford after the Christmas break.

    我们高速公路上开车回家去了。
We returned home, driving on the motorway.

  • - wash

Another Smart.fm word - all the useful words are there.

    我们今天洗了我们的衣服。
    We washed our clothes today.

  • - achieve, reach; clear; inform

This word has turned up on Smart.fm in 达到, 抵达 and 发达, but it often used phonetically as below.

    我们今天去了电影馆看了阿凡达.
Today, we went to the cinema and saw Avatar.

  • huán - pay back, return

This is a very common word in Chinese, but it is normally pronounced hái and means 'still'. I'm less familiar with it meaning to return. I chose it because yesterday we took some clothes back to the shops.

  • xuě - snow

雪 is a word that I've know for a long time, but I couldn't not use it today. Also, 大雪 (not to be confused with 大学) normally refers to one of the 24 solar terms, which is mentioned in A Key to Chinese Speech and Writing, but here (according to dict.cn at least), it just means a heavy snowfall. And don't forget 白雪 is Snowy in Tin Tin and shouldn't be confused with 白雪公主, who is Snow White.

  • yuè - exceed; the more... the more...

越来越x is one of the few Chinese grammatical constructions I know, probably because it's so simple. I recently came across 愈, which seems to work in exactly the same way, and sounds very similar ().

    越来越冷
    It got colder and colder.

  • 丰富

    fēngfù - plentiful

Today I went down to London to have a great meal with my family and dad's colleagues. The sentence below, which is from Smart.fm seemed appropriate.

    今天的菜非常丰富。
    The food today was sumptuous.

  • 椅子

    yǐzi - chair

For some reason I haven't learnt this word yet; my vocab is severely lacking in everyday object. Today I drove Daisy back to university through the snow and got a sheepskin for my chair.

  • chén - morning

This word keeps coming up and I'm surprised that I hadn't learnt it until now - I only knew 早上.

    我一直坚持每天早晨跑步。
I always go for a morning run.
