- mud

Today we went for a traditional Easter walk and got covered in mud. I remember someone once asking me about how Chinese characters worked, and whether, for example, if you combined the word for water with the word for soil, then you would get the word for mud. At the time (up until now, in fact), I didn't know the word for mud, though it seemed unlikely. Instead the word for mud has the radical for water, and then a second part that describes its pronunciation (尼 - which apparently means a Buddhist nun).

她去掉鞋上的泥。
She removed the mud from her shoes.
